DESCRIPTION
A decade before the American Revolution, The Homestead welcomed its first guests to experience the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains of Western Virginia. Today, the legendary and historic resort continues to preside over the countryside, offering unparalleled hospitality and Southern charm in a 3,000-acre setting distinguished by natural healing springs and a splendid four-season climate.
In addition to the time-honored tradition of “taking the waters,” at the historic Jefferson Pools, guests of The Homestead enjoy pampering services and a wealth of recreational opportunities including one of the nation’s most historic spas; three championship golf courses including America’s premier mountain course, The Cascades; the South’s first downhill ski area; a 48-stable Equestrian Center and show ring; a top-rated Shooting Club; as well as additional attractions suitable for the entire family.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The Homestead offers 483 luxurious guest rooms and suites, each beautifully appointed with rich fabrics and furnishings, and framed prints reflecting the resort’s historic legacy. Private baths feature modern pedestal sinks and abundant lighting. Modern amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, as well as thoughtful luxurious robes and plump feather pillows.
In 2010, The Homestead will unveil complete room renovations in the historic Tower of the resort, just in time for the 80th anniversary of the National Historic Landmark. The Tower features 67 renovated guest suites, reflecting new decor including distinctive new fabrics, porches and corridors, and marble tile floors and new pedestal sinks in the bathrooms, all while keeping with the resort’s traditional splendor.
The West Wing (built in 1904) will also receive the same updates to its 90 guest rooms, also keeping with The Homestead’s signature décor.
Among the most distinctive accommodations are five Presidents Suites, which pay homage to the many U.S. presidents who have visited throughout the resort’s history. Located in the East Wing, the spacious Madison, McKinley, Taft, Wilson and Eisenhower suites each feature two comfortable bedrooms, two grandly appointed bathrooms, a luxurious parlor, foyer, and a sitting porch with unparalleled views of the surrounding Alleghenies.
DINING
The Homestead offers a range of fine and informal dining options all of which will launch news menus in 2010 under the direction of newly appointed Executive Chef Mark Gallaudet and Food & Beverage Director, Esme Pitard. Dining outlets at The Homestead include the formal Dining Room, renowned for traditional dinner and dancing each evening (jacket required) and sumptuous breakfast buffet; the elegant 1766 Grille, where French and American cuisine resonates through classic and original creations (jacket required); and the casual but refined Sam Snead’s Tavern, where Certified Angus Beef and local Virginia Allegheny Mountain Trout enjoy quite a following.
The Presidents Lounge offers a club atmosphere for evening cocktails and cognacs, surrounded by the portraits of The Homestead’s many presidential visitors. Downstairs, the Players Pub broadcasts sporting events via large-screen TV, while guests enjoy billiards, darts and dancing. Seasonal dining choices at The Homestead include Rubino’s at the Cascades, The Casino Club, and Mountain Lodge.
SPA
The European-style Spa at The Homestead is among the nation’s most historic retreats, renowned for its naturally heated healing springs. The spa offers a tempting menu of pampering and rejuvenating treatments in a storied setting that includes a private Spa Suite, Spa Salon and KidSpa for children under 16.
Signature treatments using local indigenous ingredients include the Mineral Springs Mud Wrap; Sunflower Soak with Buttercup Bath; the Southern Harvest Apricot & Sweet Vanilla Wrap and the Virginia Dogwood Pedicure.
A fitness center equipped with Cybex circuit-training machines, a full complement of cardiovascular machines, free weights, and an aerobics room is also located at the Spa.
JEFFERSON POOLS
The authentic Jefferson Pools are a relaxing retreat for the mind and body with natural mineral spring waters. The pools are named for the third president, who sojourned to The Homestead for three weeks in 1818, and soaked in the spring waters of the Gentleman’s Pool House, which was built in 1761, and remains largely the same today as when it first opened. The pool inside is about 120 feet in circumference, and holds 40,000 gallons of constantly flowing, crystal clear, mineral spring water. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a Virginia Historic Landmark, it is considered the oldest spa structure in America.
In June 1836, a separate Ladies Pool House was opened at the Jefferson Pools, fed by another spring whose waters have the same properties as those which supply the adjacent Gentlemen's Pool House. The crystal clear spring waters at the Jefferson Pools are rich in minerals, and are a constant 98 degrees at their source - perfect, natural body temperature. “Taking the waters” at the Jefferson Pools continues to be a favorite activity today, and families are encouraged to visit the pools during the daily family hour.
The Jefferson Pools are open seasonally, with daily hours June – October, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Family soaking hours are 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. daily, and are for families with children under 18, who must be potty trained. Adult soaking hours are for those over 18. Because there are separate ladies and gentleman’s facilities, a bathing suit is optional during adult hours.
